Spend a Sunday... At Chicken Shop

Chicken shop, Highgate Rd
I know I said this blog’s purpose was for me to leave my beloved square mile of Kentish Town, but I blame the weather and when the new Chicken Shop is at the top of the road, I’m sorry, but I stayed local last weekend. (None of these are my photos because I left my phone at home!)

I went during their 50% off soft launch with my best friends but it all got a bit rowdy after a hard week and we were more interested in the jugs of wine and catching up than the chicken so I went back last Sunday.
Inside
Coming in from the cold, Chicken shop is cosy. From the wine served in tumblers to the 50s style wooden kitchen cabinets covering the walls, to the forget-me-not blue waiter's aprons. Sadly just as we had taken off our scarves and gloves, we were told it would be an hours wait for a table so we nipped across the road to The Vine pub for a glass of wine.

Exactly what we had

Chicken shop, like the name suggests, only has chicken and 4 sides to choose from. After the wait, my boyfriend and I were ravenous and ordered a whole chicken. As the starring food, the chicken would have to be the best in town, and it was pretty great, made even better with the house sauces, smokey and hot. On the side we had buttery corn on the cob, the crispiest crinkly chips and a butter lettuce and avocado salad covered in a lovely mustard seed dressing. The grub was served up quickly in comforting blue-rimmed white tin plates.

I found these pie dishes from Falcon
and they are now on my Christmas list
The waiters are really good at keeping your sauces topped up. There is nothing worse than a cold chip due to a long wait for ketchup. The homely feel continued when the whole apple pie was brought round to our table for us to deliberate which was the biggest slice for our pudding. We ordered way too much but lucky for us, they pop what you don’t finish in a tasteful brown paper doggy bag and the chicken was still delicious in a sandwich the next day.

You can buy the sauces for £3 and make
 Chicken Shop chicken at home!

Chicken Shop is part of a trio of restarants that have just opened on Highgate road. Chicken shop is downstairs, Pizza East is on the corner and Dirty burger, around the corner. It seems that no matter what food/atmosphere you fancy, one of these will fit the bill.
