Travel: Copenhagen Top 5

Colourful house by the lake

Cycle along the lakes

The only way is two wheels in the Danish capital. Pick up a bike from one of the many hire shops and pootle around the safe bicycle friendly streets. After the city was besieged in the 16th century, a  stretch of lakes were made to make the city more secure. Zip down the cycle route along the water, which in our auntumnal case was laced with auburn leaves and see the boats and swans doing their thing.

Lobster with a Christmassy wafts of burnt juniper

Host

The newest opening from Cocofo, a popular restaurant group in Copenhagen. If Noma is out of your budget, or most likely, you can’t nab a table, Host is a (slightly) more purse-friendly Nordic option. At £35 a head, the three course menu with a few extras thrown in included an intensely ‘shroomy cep soup palette cleanser. A highlight was the oxtail and beef, with a bouffant of bright pink shredded beetroot. There’s some theatre thrown in too: lobster arrived accompanied by a burning sprig of juniper whose piney smell transports the diner straight to December.

Beautiful hand drawn type for the truffle sign

Bevars

Bevar’s is a neighbourhood cafe at the foot of Ravnsborggade, the street home to vintage Danish Design. First find yourself an original Jo Hammerborg light; and then celebrate with a coffee and a homemade rum truffle here. The truffle was extremely chocolatey and made dense with oats. The interior? Not letting down team design Denmark, this cafe is white and wooden with bespectacled locals in knitwear occupying the seats, tapping away at their laptops. Lights dimmed, it turns into a homely bar come nightfall. Ravnsborggade 10 B, 2200 København, Nørrebro

The 40 beers on tap this week

Mikkeller and Friends

Craft ale has taken over London and now this 40 tap bar by Danish brewery Mikkeler is teaching the Danes a thing or two about the importance of the pint. If Ikea made pubs, I'm pretty sure it would look something like Mikkeler and Friends. Bright, white and airy, it's the second bar by  who sell the ales in five different measures, from a dainty 175 ml to a pint. When we popped in on a Thursday night, it was London week, so favourite Kernal was being spotlighted. Stefansgade 35, KLD. DK-2200 Copenhagen

Shopping

Copenhagen is great for shopping, not just because they use their great Danish eye to make everything from their shop windows to their packaging look beautiful but also because all the best Danish brands are slightly cheaper here and often have sample or outlets that are so much better than the London ones. Our favourites was the Woodwood Museum shop where you can get Kenzo, Gitman and Opening Ceremony pieces at up to 70% off. I found my favourite shoes of all time and realised I a. couldn't afford them and b. Easyjet's stingy cabin allowance meant I would have had to run for my plane in these 6" gems. I'm also still pining for a grey angora jumper I found in Acne Archive that was just a tad too small.
